Re: [AMC-list] best automatic behind healthy 304?

This discussion has me wondering about how to set up my CJ8. As I probably will not find a suitable Rebel for my 343, I am leaning towards putting the 343 in the Scrambler rather than sitting on the engine stand. With it's high H.P. a suitable drive train now should be considered. As this a collector, never was Reg or driven, I need enough power to pull my 22ft deck boat, did double frame it, but worrried about stock tranny and rear end. As with many, money is an issue, not that I am broke, but want to spend it wisely. All tub componets are like new, I do not feel that drive train alterations will effect value, show one's are bringing good money, and the objective is for show and go, no offraod, to darn old for that.

Recommendations????maybe should hook up with Nick, as he is close, me in Duluth Minn, him in that state that says "we want Brett Back"

Dave,

Providing you have a post 71 304, I would use a fresh V8 904 (not the standard 6 cyl one). If built properly, you can run that trans behind even a 401 without problems. You could run the 727 but it is over kill for what you are doing and like you mentioned, it does take a little more hp/torque to transfer the power to the rear tires than the 904 does.

ok, so i got a 304 im am fixing to start going thru, refresh ect. edelbrock
intake/carb, headers, decent cam (not sure what one yet) little head work,
you know, healthy streetable stuff. i want to drop this motor into rosie. (63
american 440H) ya ya ya, i know, gotta do some cutting. i want to be able to
drive it to town when i want. now remember, town is 45 miles away also. but,
i want to have it stout enough to be able to take it to the drag strip to run also. i have heard that the 727 eats a lot of torque, but the 304 would NEVER
lunch it. so, i guess that would be the 904 and 998? one has a lock up
converter also if i recall correct? are the lockup converters controlable? or
is that all in the trans? im planning to go find an 8.8 rear out of one of
those mountaineers/exploders with disk brakes, lsd.
the engine i have has flexplate for auto, and the car already has the auto in
it, so i want to just stick with a tf auto i think. i assume they are better
than the bw autos? i am NOT an auto guy, but going to stick with it, just
because both already are set up for them.
i am HOPEFULLY getting a 401 for little of nothing that i want to put in
casper. leave the 401 just pretty basic and put a decent t-5 behind it, and
be REAL careful. i think they will both be fun...
ya ya ya, no work tomorrow, so i have had a few um, "banquet beers" so they
call them?? so someone just tell me im dumb if i am.
