Re: [AMC-list] amc eagle vented gas caps

Thanks Joe, under the car and off to passenger side there is some small unit that is long since outlived it's usefulness, some solenoid looking thing. The old man who owned this 88 Eagle obviously bypassed it. Still I guess would not explain why sometimes during heat of summer have same effect on my AMCs built 35-40 years ago however. Pelosi, what a turd! Anyways, appreciate all the replies so far.

Your Eagle gas cap is already vented but it is vented to vacuum and not pressure. In other words if there's a vacuum in the tank (or the vapor recovery system if still you had one) the gas cap would allow air to enter the system to relieve the vacuum. In your case, I'm just guessing that you may have plugged the vapor recovery system lines when you removed the cannister etc. and that is allowing pressure to build in your system.

Obviously the smog test station does not test the vapor recovery system in the Houston area since the car passes smog Eddie. Here in California they do check for that we have to make sure the the vapor recovery system is intact and that none of the lines leaks vapors. God knows we wouldn't want Nancy Pelosi to smell gas fumes.

Hi Ken, no, the gas vapor recovery is
gone. The car does have a gas return line, one fuel
line to carb, the other for overflow(?) back to tank
however. The car passed emissions no
problem. This air in tank sometimes also happens on some of
my other AMC models also, even
the 68 Rebel convertible 'Machine' sometimes has this
'whoosh!' effect when opening the
gas cap.
