I'd check ALL of the vacuum hoses and replace any that are suspect. It's not likely a vacuum leak, since the sputtering happens at cruise power, but having sound vacuum readings never hurts. Since fuel system treatment seemed to correct the problem temporarily, and the "sputtering" was at 40 mph or greater that might indicate that there is some soluble dirt or varnish in the main metering circuit of your carb. Have you cleaned the gas tank and fuel lines? Do you have a clean filter between the pump and the carb? If you have rebuilt this carb yourself or you have had it rebuilt and it's still causing problems, I think I'd opt for a remanufactured carb that comes with a warranty or I would try to find a new BBD carb if you don't want the hassle of changing the manifold and linkage. If the carb has never been rebuilt you could perhaps get it rebuilt by someone you trust. I think there is also someone reproducing the BBD carb now, thanks to the demand from Jeepers, so you if that's true you could get a new carb. I don't have a web reference but you might be able to find the vendor with a web search. If you don't mind changing the manifold the Carter YF carb is the typical single barrel carb used on the 70s AMCs and they are very commonly available as remanufactured carbs or can be found as NOS carbs too.
