i don't know if it's the only reason, but it's a big one.  imho
welding without cracking it, and so it won't crack under its own heat
when the engine's running, is no easy task.  for the effort you'd put
into it, it'd be easier to just get the '80s exhaust, bolt it up, and
be done with it.
