I think most of your questions have been adequately answered by others. I just have a couple points to make:1. If you use the late model AMC 6 Autolite, get the whole setup. Distributor and the electronic ignition box on the firewall. We can help you wire it up, but at least get the connectors from the old harness. 2. Pertronix calls their latest points distributor upgrade the Ignitor or Ignitor II, so they are indeed the same thing. 3. The GM six cylinder HEI units came both ways -- coil on firewall for early models, coil in cap for later ones. The coil in cap models have a larger diameter distributor body and cap, so you can't just swap the cap and coil over. 4. There is a "TFI Upgrade" for the Motorcraft distributor. It uses a larger cap and rotor, better wires (more positive connection on the ends at the distributor), and more powerful coil. You can use the cap/rotor/wires with a stock type coil or an aftermarket high-energy coil instead of the Ford TFI coil, but the coil is where the hotter fire is. Just search for "Jeep TFI Upgrade". What Ford did is make an adapter for a new cap for their old model distributor instead of making a completely new distributor body like GM did. They learned a lesson from AMC!! I run the TFI upgrade on my 258 and love it! Just get the parts from a 1989 or so F-150 w/4.9L six. The TFI coil is kind of high, you might want to check a salvage yard for that, or just use something like an Accell "FlameThrower" or other high voltage coil.

A points distributor with a pertronix setup(I think that was it.) 3. A points distributor with an Ignitor electronic ignition conversion unit. 4. An HEI setup from a 75-79 250/292.(using the gear off of my current distributor. 5. Just keep my points distributor.(Is there an advantage to changing to electronic ignition?) -- Frank SwygertPublisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC)
