There's no way to tell if an auto trans works or not without installing it, unfortunately. The only thing that you really need to do before installing is replace the front seal. The trans has to come out to do that, so I'd replace it no matter what it looks like. Rear seal is a good idea too. Since it has a lot of miles on it you might want to replace the bushing in the tailshaft, but that can be done easy enough with the trans in the car. I had problems with mine leaking in the rear even after the rear seal was replaced. Replacing the bushing fixed it. 

Other than that just drain that fluid and replace the filter screen. Drain as much as you can out of the torque converter too. You might want to pour about a quart of diesel fuel in the converter and rinse it out. I don't think I'd use any more aggressive solvent due to the bearings, but diesel won't hurt it. 

The AW4 is a tough trans that lasts a long time, it has to be really abused to tear up. Heavy of-road use CAN do it, but it handles that pretty well too.
