I understand the concern for safety, but why not work with the American? You can get shoulder belt kits for it. For the two doors they require welding in an anchor point in the B pillar, there's an easy work-around for four doors if you don't mind a bolt head showing when the doors are open. It's easy enough to replace the seats with newer models that have a head rest. I have Eagle Premier seats in my Classic. They are squared off low back seats that look almost period correct. The power adjustments and "hollow" headrests give them away, but don't look too modern for the car. Chrysler K-car seats (and derivatives -- like the Acclaim and Spirit made into the mid 90s as well as the front drive LeBaron and New Yorker) are pretty much the correct size and shape, and the head rests look more period for the Rambler. 

That doesn't help the padded dash, but the later model Americans did have some dash padding -- it was mandatory starting in 66 or 67. I'm not sure the dash is close enough that one of those would fit the 65, but the entire dash could be changed. That would change the look and feel of the car a lot more than just changing the seats and adding shoulder belts though. If you can live without the dash pad (if the shoulder belts are working, the pad isn't really needed!), you can "safetyize" your Rambler and no one would chastise you for doing it.

After getting back from my son's spinal fusion surgery, then spending
another day in the ER due to other problems (a combination of
dehydration, low blood pressure and standing too quickly - my son
literally could not see at all until he got back in bed) - I'm
thinking the Rambler American may need to go. I enjoy driving it, but
I think it would be best to go with something from the 70's - with
high back seats, three-point seat belts and a padded dash.

Anyway - anyone have luck selling their project on e-Bay and or
Craigslist? Any recommendations? Hints on presentation? I want to keep
in the AMC hobby, but I also want to keep my son involved in it - so
am considering selling the '65 American (and maybe the Apache popup)
and looking for a Hornet.
