I had a Quad-4 in my '89 Olds Cutlass Calais (Grand Am platform) and it was a real screamer for a 4-door sedan. I never had engine problems with it. Did start having a problem with the lock-up converter staying engaged at stop-lights, which kept it in high gear, instead of down shifting. Had to pull serious neutral-into-gear hole shots to get going. A buddy that worked in service at the dealer told me to unhook the harness to the tranny and it would keep the lock-up from engaging (a lot cheaper than fixing the thing). Nice thing was, my redline RPM's went from 6,000 (limited) up to 6,600. After that, I could beat similar year 5.7L Firebirds off the line and down the expressway ramp for about 500 yds. That was always a blast. In general, the later ones have all the quirks and bugs worked out. Rather than a Quad-4 you really want a 1996-2001 "Twin-Cam". Same engine, new name to mark all the improvements. Any of those should be good to go. The rodder community calls them all Quad-4, thus a bit of confusion. I'm pretty sure the one the guy on hotrodders.com is building is a 96-97 model, but I'll ask. The Ecotec appears to be based on the Q4 design, though of course thoroughly modernized. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
