Based on all the replies I think I'll try and locate another set of rims first. The tires are new and balanced. The rims must be 40 years old and who knows how long the car sat with them, probably years. Is it possible that even if the tires are new and balanced and front end aligned that the rims could still be the problem. Then I'll check drive shaft or rear end bushings per dave s. reply.
