My 77 Gremlin has made sort of a clacking sound an idle for the last several months. I had thought it was perhaps the vanes in the air pump. Or perhaps water pump bearings. It seems to go away when you race the engine. The car has developed leak from the front crankshaft oil seal lately too. I've been driving it to work and it has been marking it's territory in the parking lot there and here at home. After I was through painting the Rambler today, I washed the Gremmie and pulled it into my driveway and got under it to see if it was perhaps something other than the front seal. No joy, it does appear to be the seal, but I found that one of the crank pulley bolts was missing. I replaced that bolt and the noise disappeared. Yahoo. Now I hope with the crankshaft being evenly loaded by fan belt, the oil leak will dimension. Well, I can hope can't I?
