Jim, Yes there is a trick. I have removed those little (very important) rings on several dash overlays now, and consider myself somewhat half a$$ed qualified to give some advice. Removing them is definitely a worry-some process. Especially if they are near show condition rings. Each ring has four little triangle shaped retainer tabs that stick through into the dash overlay "cutout" for the instruments. Each tab must be pushed inward slightly while trying to "pop" them out of the groove they lock into. Make sure the temperature is warm. Don't try this when the dash overlay is cold. The plastic is ABS so it does give a little but it can be brittle if old and cold too. Work them carefully and slowly, using blunt flat bladed instruments (screw drivers). Push one of the tabs to the inside and slide the ring outward at the same time with your thumbnail, or another screwdriver. work each one a little at a time until you get them to pop out. If you are very careful you can sort of "walk" the ring out away from the grooves using the screwdriver to pry between the ring and the overlay on the inside of the ring where it shoulders against the overlay cutout. Be careful, keep the blade flat and only use it enough to move the tab out of the groove. then the ring will slide out. Don't get too nervous though as they can also just pop out pretty easy and all of a sudden too. they are kinda tough and resilient, any way the ones I've seen so far (five sets). Hope this helps. I see at back of piece there are small tabs securing the rings in place, but I don't want to tear it up trying to remove it.?
