Once again good advice from Mark.
Let me add,  the most important things you need to do for the rebuild are;
Remove engine block from bay, disassemble all of engine, thoroughly clean
all of block and all parts. If there's metal in the pan there's metal
everywhere, oil passages (in crank too), oil pump, even, possibly,  inside
lifters.
Re-establish all bearing clearances, including camshaft.
inspect distributor and clean where bearings are.

Clean clean clean...........
Like Mark alluded to, your downfall may have been when you checked the
bearings, something may have gotten loose and polluted the oiling system,
end result, failed bearing on a rod.

Others please add to the list here, I'm sure I didn't scope everything.

Did you clean in or around anything when you checked the bearings?
Removing varnish from used bearings is a no-no as it can change clearances.
If the crank is undamaged it sounds like a cleanup and rebuild will get you
oin the road. Be sure to check clearances.
I'd also be sure and stick with plain old cast iron rings. Don't try and get
fancy with materials unless you are really "building" it.

got the oil pan dropped tonight and rods pulled, and pistons popped out.
rings
looked good. crank looked good, and rods looked good. #6 rod bearing is
almost
completely GONE. very little left. not spun, just worn. wierd. none of the
rods were loose either. real wierd think is, i had pulled the rod caps off
and checked the bearings and crank. everything looked like new. now, all the
bearings look worn pretty bad. all down to the copper or what ever the base
material is. got to clean out the bottom of the oil pan as it has a fair
amount of bearing junk in it.

anyone else ever have issues with the bearings after they checked them? a
little bit of emery cloth to the crank, and hone the cylinders and should be
good to go.
