i have always used dexron/mercron II atf. never had a problem. on an '89 ford
f150 4x4 i had years ago, had never had the power steering fluid changed. and
it was ps fluid, not atf. was burnt, dirty and nasty. had to replace the pump.
steering box was nasty. used atf to flush it out. filled it up, and ran it for
about a month. flushed it out with atf 2 more times, and 3rd time, it came out
all nice and clean. atf has alot more detergents in it to make things clean i
have been told. i have always had good luck with it. seems to withstand heat
a little better for 4x4 trucks that see offroad time like i used to do.
