Before I even started the engine I pulled the gas tank and brought it in to a shop to clean it. I checked it with a flashlight before putting it back on, and it looked good to me. I did not change the sock on the fuel pick up. I did change the rubber sections of gas line, but did not change the main steel fuel line. I swapped out the fuel pump for a reman. My son rebuilt the carb. I put on a new line between the fuel pump and the carb. It does make sense that it could be picking up crud along the way - just not sure where (the main section of line is still old, though). I did clean out the tank way back in March of last year - and haven't driven it since maybe the end of summer. I'm pointing to a cheapy gas station - but then again, I gassed up my '03 Corolla and '06 Highlander at the same station a few days later with no problems at all - so that's probably not it - unless I got bottom of the barrel stuff in my Rambler before bringing my other cars in for fuel. Anyway, I'll try to figure it out. Frank Swygert wrote: > Bruce, was that gas tank cleaned with some kind of solvent or acid based cleaner before you started using it again? If not, THAT'S where the gunk came from! One thing that ethanol in gas does good is keep the fuel system clean. Ethanol is, after all, the main ingredient in most fuel system cleaners. But you don't get a 10% concentration with a few ounces of cleaner! A lot of people experienced problems with older cars when ethanol first came into common use. Some of the problem was incompatible rubber parts, but those were actually few and far between -- most such parts had been replaced with newer materials on cars that were in daily service. All the old varnish and such in the tanks and fuel system started to come loose and get cleaned up -- and had to go through the engine. That was by far more of a problem for a longer time period, and still hits us today when reviving a car that has sat for a long time. I suspect that's most of your problem.
