Jerry trash that automatic choke. They never even worked right when the were new.

 Well, I got home with enough daylight left to tinker on the Sportabout. I found a broken nipple and vacuum line to the gas canister, the main vacuum, it was sucking and whistling like you wouldn't believe! Actually, the carb whistled when you hit the throttle, the vacuum line not at all. So I plugged that leak, reset the incorrectly set semi-auto choke, and the Hornet buzzs along fine at 95 MPH now. Pretty smooth, no hesitation now, and while the 1-bbl is not very peppy, it at least can get out of it's own way now. Drove it up to the Advanced Auto store, bought some new hoses, valve cover insert, auto stick handle knob, and installed them "under the lights" there. Blasted up the Interstate on the last leg of my drive home, and was pleased with the throttle response, no lag, no vibrations from the car, either. Other than the exhaust leak, and some oil leakage at the valve cover, it should be good to go now. Of course other things are broken and worn out,
 but at least now it's driveable and hopefully more reliable. 
  I found out they still carry the hatch struts, $42 each, so after getting assurance they're 100% guaranteed to fit, I placed my order at Advance Auto Parts , I should have them Saturday or Monday. That heavy hatch is DANGEROUS! Whew. Both struts are broken. Anyway, I am going to try to drive it to work tomorrow, see how it does. Hopefully it will get out of OTHERS way in the chilly morning. I'll take it down the street first, if it is still not right, I'll just take the Jeep. But I'm more confident now that the vacuum leak has been found, and it responds better. 
 Well, that's all the AMCing I can do tonight, except dream. LOL All for now,
