DUH!! That's what I was really thinking about when I just typed about the water pump! I should read the whole digest before responding, helps keep the foot out of the mouth sometimes...
Still, it's unusual for the distributor hold-down hole to be drilled and tapped.

Isn't that the hole for the flathead distributor? It went on the carb side of the block and I had a heck of a time finding a plug to fit that hole.
