FWD or RWD? 2.3L got TBI or MPFI. Jeep Renix TBI is pretty reliable.
Speaking of old Fords, 1.6L '70 Pintos were a rare find (I enjoyed the heck out of mine with the 5 speed)

here's your chance to broaden your horizons! ;^>
imho the likeliest prospects would be the ohc pinto mill [which
survived into the '90s] and the pushrod taurus [?] mill cut down from
the old falcon six. both are in the 2.0-2.5L range.
