Here's a good site where you can buy a generator to alternator bracket. The illustrations are good enough you could also use them to make your own. You can drill the 67 bell and bolt the 62 brackets to it. There's not a lot of stress on the bell. I've done it before. I believe we bent some 2" wide x 1/8" thick strap steel up to make a "perch" that bolted to the bell. If you have some 1/8" plate it would be easy to make a spacer between the trans and bell and bend a lip forward, sort of like the front mount plate that sits behind the timing cover. I like that idea better, but the strap was easier to get and work with in a limited shop. Hmmm... that's an interesting way of mounting the engine. It will be a bit more work, but the resulting plates should work for any 62. They MIGHT work for 58-61 models, but there won't be pre-drilled holes in the crossmember. The CM is different on those, but roughly in the same location. If they will work for the 58-62 big cars you might be bale to fab and sell a few. Not enough to make a lot of money on, but a little pocket change. If nothing else make a sketch with dimensions and take some photos of the finished product and share it! I'll be very interested in printing something on your whole conversion in AMC Magazine -- so take some pics!! ------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 15:28:01 -0500 From: "oldcars@xxxxxxxxx" <oldcars@xxxxxxxxx> A good wiring diagram for this conversion (Delco generator to Delcotron [alternator -- 10si or 12 si] with internal regulator, with a 3-wire connection so that the "idiot" light on the dash will still work) can be found at this Corvair site (since the Corvair used an indentical generator): http://www.unm.edu/~geoffj/Vair/Alternator.html Of course, I still have to either fix the 62 T96 by installing the internals from the 67 T96, or to swap over the 67 Clutch housing...but since I will plan on installing the 67 199, I guess I better keep the 62 housing so that the whole assembly can be installed in the correct position, since the rear mounts are on the 62 housing. I think I will end up using the 67 insulators in the holes on the middle (suspension) crossmember, and work up some adaptor plates to go between the brackets on the sides of the 199 and the insulators. The difference in mounting position looks to be about 2 1/2 inches forward from the 64-style location, and about an inch to 1 1/4 inches higher. I hope that plate stock will work for the plates. If the plates work out, it could be a standard part for swapping in 7-main-bearing engines in place of the 172-184-196. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
