Don, I just finished a 390 Rebel Machine engine with the stock Machine intake. The engine made 495 ft.lbs of torque at 3700 rpm. It was already over 400 ft lbs at 3000 rpm. Upper HP was hurt slightly due to the shallow plenum and the # 5 cylinder wasn't getting the same amount of fuel as the other cylinders due to how the runner go so some slights mods really helps. The Machine intake is a much better design than the other stock AMC intakes and much more like the R4B. The one thing that would be beneficial is to remove the separator between the two sides of the intake. This will help even out the fuel distribution and open the plenum a bit for more hp. The 291 heads on a 70 390 would be the same head that was on a 360 for 1970 and early 71. To my knowledge, there was no difference in a Machine as far as the heads go. The Machine did have a more aggressive cam than the 360 would have come with so that should be a good upgrade as well. Nick, Alfano Performance 4849-76 st. When I bought the car, I was a member of the dealership sponsored car club for AMC's. My car came with a 360 and I was wanting to perk it up and the dealership came up with a set of "Machine" heads, cam, and intake manifold. Now I know the heads have the big valves and the cam was a little more racy but I've always wondered about the intake. The one I have, has a part number ending in 762C and seems to flow well but I thought the weight saving of an aluminum aftermarket would be worth looking into. I did see one article, can't remember where, and they claimed some pretty high flow numbers for the 291 heads and this manifold. Any thoughts?
