Richard, if this is going to be a daily driver by all means do the 4.0L upgrade, EFI and all. You won't regret it, and it will have more power than the 304. If you can find a 2WD Jeep with AW4 you'd really have a great combo, only you'd need lower gears. The Jeep axle will fit but it's wide -- you'd need to run the Jeep or Eagle deep set wheels on the rear. If you find one with a five speed the gears in the Concord wouldn't be too bad, but you wouldn't use fifth much. 5 speed 4.0Ls came with 3.08 gears, but from experience 3.23-3.31 would be better. The AW4 needs 3.55 (stock Jeep) or 3.73 gears to be effective in OD. In a lighter, slightly more aerodynamic vehicle like the Concord you could probably get by with 3.31 gears with the AW4, but no higher!

Got the 82 Clean Loaded Concord w/bad piston in the garage!  Trying to calculate the least expensive way to go...  have 304 which would need valve job, bearings and rings and minimum rebuild, plus the cross member conversion.  Or- a 4.0 Jeep 6 banger (love that torque) and an early head (rebuild one available) and whatever else needed in that conversion.  Or-replace the piston and gaskets on original (105,000 mile) motor.  Of course not a lot of funds available at this time, but some, and the need to get this running so as to sell the 80 Wagon per what I told my wife, in case she was listening to me.  Yeah, she was...
