Greetings from under the snowbanks... Yeah, the 2 bbl were lower compression than the 4bbls, BUT keep in mind that a 2bbl could have been added to an engine born with 4bbls. Therefore the ONLY way to surely tell is the piston itself...the 2bbl has but one notch the 4bbl has two (or is it the other way around??)... The bore is clearly on the land behind the right cylinder head...and the 'compression' and size is on the tag on the alternator bracket...assuming, of course, the bracket is original to that car!! So you could end up with a 327 bbl engine where a 287 2bbl was born and not know it because the VIN says '287'! Of course, engine color helps, but that, too, is changeable. That is done using this chemical called, 'paint'. You can tell an 'early' 327 from a later one by the location of the motor mounts. 57-62 is your 'early' engine, and then 63-up the laters. Do keep in mind that these cannot be switched. A 63 engine won't fit into a 62 because the mount brace holes are simply not present in the other's 'vice versa'...that is, you can't just switch the placement of the mounts because there isn't anyplace to put it. For the Trannys, if it has cable control (ie, push button), these cases are not interchangeable either. SO again, 62 and down, 63 and up. For Select-o-matic vs Flash-O-Matic, these can be interchanged but some have vacuum controls and others do not. These can interchange but you'll change some 'lines' and 'cables'. Other than that...everything is just fine. Why, though, is '62 such a 'one year only' model?? Even the Package Net is year specific!
