Good article. It covered the '50's compacts very well. Interesting that the article did not talk about the Big Three's answer in the early 60's (Corvair, Nova, Falcon, Dart, Valiant). Yes, Independents tried compacts and failed at it - except for AMC with the Rambler. But the Big Three all had decent compacts in the early 60's - and they all gave way to bloat and low consumer demand.
