japan listened to edwards deming when he talked about product quality.
our industry didn't.  the only reason they make cars that go 100k mi
between tuneups is it's the law.

side note: how many workers do japanese plants here employ, compared
to us makers?  i have no idea.

btw deming developed his ideas about qc and product improvement as a
college student working summers at at&t.
