Joe, if you do like Frank says and screw a piece onto the tank then solder the joints. Make sure you wire brush and add flux to both parts prior to joining them. When you heat the area the flux will prepare the metal and actually wick the solder into the joint. Have you talked to any radiator shops in the area, the one here does gas tank cleaning and repair. Not cheap, around $150-200, but a good job and no worries after.
