It's most likely trash in the valve body, maybe from a deteriorated gasket or seal. I had the exact same thing happen to the first auto equipped Rambler I bought. Drove it for a couple weeks then BAM! -- only first and reverse. Decided to build the tranny myself, and got worried when the clutches I was taking out looked as good as the ones I was putting in. Contacted PO, and he said the trans had been built about a year before it was parked, and it had been parked a couple years before I bought it -- he resurrected it to sell (this was WAAAYYY back around 1983 or 84). Same results after I rebuilt it. Took it to a local shop, who told me they'd have to charge for a complete rebuild, no telling what I'd done wrong. Understandable! Well, the owner told me I had done a good job, and the trans still had the same problem! He played with it until it would go in gear, but would slam into gear very hard. Couldn't find the exact problem, but after he cracked the case playing with it (c
 racked over one of the servos, it was slamming into gear THAT hard!), he tossed the original valve body across a field in back of the shop (wouldn't want to crawl around back there!) and used my good parts in another case he luckily had stashed in back for parts. He was glad to see me go with that thing! The only thing he could come up with was that either some passages in the valve body were worn through or permanently clogged. He had hot tanked the valve body at least once, and it always air checked fine (there are test point in the trans that you can apply air pressure to to check operation of certain valves, servos, clutches, etc.). 

You might be fine after dropping the pan, changing the fluid, cleaning the screen, and disassembling and cleaning the valve body. Don't attempt to remove or clean the valve body without reading the TSM first! There may be small ball valves that will fall out and you need to catch them and know where to put them when reassembling.

Last week went to move the Rambler to storage and the only way to move it forward was low 25mph or less. It had been sitting in my garage since July. checked fluid 1/2 qt low, filled it and no better. Only drove less than  a mile. Reverse was fine.  Any  suggestions ?  car is 64 Rambler 770 with 232,original transmission (85,000 miles). Never even started or drove the Marlin this year (has new eng,tran etc) Hopefully next year things will be better and I will be able to use them. Thanks for all imput.
