Re: [Amc-list] Pacer Front End

SERIOUS ANSWER: He's an idiot when it come to AMC. AMC bought the rack and pinion steering assembly from GM. It won't fit ANY GM cars though -- it was made to order. Now the seals and all are standard GM, the rack width is what had to be special for the Pacer to prevent bump steer. The setup is similar to the 70s Camaro/Nova only in the placement of the coil spring -- between the frame and lower control arm.

NOT SERIOUS AT ALL: Don't you know anything about AMC Kent? They only assembled cars from parts made by everyone else. Bud and Fisher made the bodies, they bought engines from several sources -- Ford 390s, Chrysler 360s, Chevy sixes, Olds 401s. They sometimes had the bore altered a bit to change the size -- the 258 six instead of the 250. Chevy didn't mind, they were phasing out the 250 in their cars anyway. They used what they could from whoever would give them the best deal. That's why it's hard to interchange parts -- sometimes you find a Motorola alternator, sometimes a GM (Delco), and on older ones you'll even find a Ford (Autolite) generator. Isn't it obvious they didn't make anything themselves?

At a cruise last night, I met a fellow who seemed to know AMC's pretty well. He mentioned the front end under the Pacer is a 70's Camaro/Nova front end, rack and pinion steering, and all. Anyone able to confirm?
