Your friend probably says "drive it" because when it breaks, it's "just
a rambler" and you won't care!
It will break if it really is a rod noise. It's 40+ years old, its a
testament to the quality of the motor that it's running at all, you can
hardly hold it against Nash or AMC. Likely bad maintenance over the past
decades by previous owners.
There is no quick fix for that. If a rod bearing has gone bad 99% chance
it was run low on oil etc and journals are scored.
If the conn rod exits the side of the block it won't be repairable, or
even good for parts! Best fix it now.
