That things only got a 10-12 gallon tank!
 You may have answered your own question as to why it smokes!
I have truthfully never seen any difference when try to dilute "bad" gas between using premium of 87 octane.
It all does about the same.
  Fill it up and drive it. If it is actively missing then I'd identify those plugs and only replace them till you run that tank of gas out. Or drain the tank and start fresh.
Either way I'd not bother with a full set of plugs till you get that tank of gas gone.
  By the time it is run through you should be getting an idea as to if the rings are the problem or not.
Don't try this if it smokes so bad people can't see to drive behind you or if it is overheating, pinging violently etc;

   I don't use anythingi n gas except Stabil and only when winter approaches and i'm not sure of how much more I will drive it.  For winter storage it is also best to store with a nearly full tank of gas too. Less condensation will occur.  Learned that the hardway on boats!
