There's a line up from the oil pump. It goes to a tee. One outlet is the
valve train junk. The other outlet is the filter, mounted so that the
filter drains into the pan. The line itself will drain back to the sump,
but that's what, 25cc?

Yes, in the present filter location. But if I moved it to the other
side, and mounted it screw-up, it would stay full. Only the line would
drain back.
With a silly stack of adapters, I could run a better filter too using an
aftermarket remote filter kit (I have one laying around). 1/8" to the
1/2" fittings on the aftermarket mount.
Basically the stock setup is a "remote filter", but with 1/8" lines and
an old fashioned filter.
I think I might do this! Better filtration would not hurt!
I could use a Pentium cooler as an oil cooler, it would fit right onto
the 1/8" line! OK, I won't be doing that part...
