I put a rubber line on my 63 American after using the original metal line into the early 90s. Went to a show one year near Dayton from Warner Robins, GA, and the thing started vapor locking after 30 years!! Never had a problem in Idaho, Seattle, SC or anywhere between, but that summer in Ohio it started vapor locking. Probably a combination of altitude and humidity? Anyway, I knew what the problem was, only happened when I shut the engine off and the line heat soaked. After the second half-hour fuel top off I spotted an Ace hardware store across the street and fixed the problem -- bought a tubing cutter and some rubber line and fixed it right there! 

The sound coming from the trans cover is worrisome if you have an auto trans. The flex plates are hardened and known to crack with age. All the Rambler suppliers have replacements. Not much to it, just a disc of metal with holes drilled in the right places, but the trans has to come out to replace it. If you have a stick car check the bolts holding the pressure plate on for tightness.

I gave up on trying to be fancy with the line from the fuel pump to
the carb. I talked to a guy at Napa (after going through a couple 40"
lengths of 5/16" steel fuel line). He suggested using the dark easy
bending stuff. He simply ran straight up from the fuel pump, over the
valve cover and up to his carb on his straight 6 Jeep. Hmmmm, sounded
easy. Said when he takes off the valve cover, he just unhooks his fuel
line from the carb and turns it out of the way.

We checked the valves and they were fine. I tightened a few, loosened
a few - but they were all very close. I'm starting to think the noise
is from the access plates - so picked up some Right Stuff and will
address it this week.

If was fun being on the road again.
