The T18 has the shifter right through the top of the trans.  The see a pic of it or the NP435, go to www.novak-adapt.com and see the different manual tranny pages.
 
You can mate a Ford Trans to an AMC with a Jeep CJ bell from a few different tranny models that used ford patterns.  I'm using one to put a Ranger OD and Ford T18 into my Grand Wagoneer.  It's the short AMC Bell ... 6 5/16 or so.

According to the article at Hemmings, the BIG toploader is a side-shifter like
the T-10. The one I saw could be a NewProcess. Wonder if the shift patterns are
different? IIRC reverse on this one was right and up.
