Great news on the T-96! Yeah, those square snap rings can be a pain. Now that you mention it I remember tapping the rings with a punch/hammer to make sure they are seated, but it's been a while and I didn't think of it before. Oil from a leaking rear main gets on the clutch. Unfortunately, I know this for sure! Think about it -- just as you say, it gets on the back of the flywheel. Well, then it slings all over the bell housing, and runs/drips from the top side onto the clutch. If the clutch disc is drawing moisture it will swell slightly and can stick. I had that problem with one, but it was an old clutch that had been in a while. That pop you hear is the clutch disc fighting the hub springs. Shouldn't be a problem, may eventually weaken the springs, but I'd think something would break before that's noticeable. Unless you know for sure you have a bad rear main leak I'd drive it. Driving may "break in" (wear down?) the clutch disc and "fix" the problem. ------------- Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2008 19:58:10 -0700 From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Would mean gunk on the disc, not good. But no real way to get oil in there, and what else would it be? Leaking rear seal flings oil down the BACK of the flywheel. The only source of good near the face is the pilot bearing, and it's NOT overlubed, in fact, it's probably slightly too dry. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
