how about a halda coffee-grinder [grenade-size mechanical calculator]
and .01-mi stewart warner trip odo, precisely calibrated to the brand
and size of your tires? haldas are probably also a small fortune
these days, if you can find one.
i remember the ads from the '60s - they were quite the invention, but
i didn't know until much later that they were devised by a nazi pow,
who did it all in his head while in the prison camp as a way of
keeping his sanity. he patented it after the war and i hope he made a
fortune, because he and it certainly deserved it. iirc they were good
to 6 or 7 digits precision.
