With an adapter you can use a Ford V-6 T-5. The adapters are $180, and I haven't tried it yet, but I do know that early Ford Falcons with the 144/170/200 six used a T-96. See http://www.safepay.net/cgi-bin/shop/cart.cgi?db=mddata.txt&category=Adapters&merchant=moderndriveline, the 60-65 Falcon w/2.77 three speed should be a T-96 pattern to T-5 adapter -- looks like it's the "short" pattern T-96 which would be in 58-63 Americans and 56-62 big cars. Easy to drill the lower two holes which dropped lower in later cars -- the top two stayed the same. Might be a difference in index hole (the big one!) though. Decks on the blocks are easy -- "short deck" is all 64-70 199/232 sixes. The "tall deck" came with the introduction of the 258 and dropping of the 199 in 1971. No tall deck 199s! All 71-06 sixes are tall deck. Only two lengths of rods were used, those for the 199 and 232. 64-70 199 and 71-79 232 share the same rod length, along with the 87-06 242 (4.0L) -- 6.125". 64-70 232s and 71-89 258s use a shorter rod due to the longer stroke -- 5.875". There are a few relatively minor differences in blocks, but those can be overcome with a little ingenuity and the correct mix of parts -- mostly the later! --------------- Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2008 09:44:51 -0700 From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Frank Swygert wrote: > In order to get the best transmission options you definitely want a 72+ > block! Absolutely. I can't think of any transmission I'd LIKE that would fit behind the old six pattern. (What's the choice, the BW autos, T96, T14, anything else at all? Funky old Nash crashboxes don't count. > A 72-mid 80 block (cast iron intake) would be best as they are > slightly heavier than mid 80+ (aluminum intake). Damn, someone needs to go through the TSMs and Datson books and type all that crap into one huge-a** spreadsheet so we have it all in one place! bore stroke rod length pin height deck height ... not rocket science. Four people in a room with beer and keyboards could get it done in an afternoon. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
