Re: [Amc-list] Howell TBI in a 63 Classic...

I know your anti modern, xcept your finally trying efi...
Go to an electric fan setup, get one off a taurus or similar mid to late 90's Fraud.
They are two speed fans, beware high speed pulls a buttload of amps.
However 90+% of the time you won't even need low speed.
I run my American on a flip swithc thru a relay. I rarely engage it.
With 180* stat it very seldom sees above 210*. Even in 90* weather it only runs about 192* at anything above 30mph.
I can usually sit thru a full light and not need to actuate it.
With A/C you will have to see what setting works best, but you should see an improvement in your A/C by running th electric as it will move more air at lights and in stop and go traffic.
I'm only mentioning this as you are mentioning ping and want it to run cooler.
I'd stay wqith the 180 stat, the howell should do fine with that temp.
I've done engine driven to electric conversions on a couple of vehilces all have averaged a 1 mpg increase in traffic and low speed driving.
It also will giving you just a little better throttle response on takeoff.
The 196 would be the ideal engine to do this to as every little bit makes a difference with the smaller engines.

I run a 80's Xcar fan on my American as it was a freebie. It uses the fan motor that looks like a heater fan.
I had to do some carefull manipulation to get it to fit, but it cools like a bear and seems to be low draw. Nice and quiet too. I ran one of these fans in a 84 Mustang GT and it also cooled the 5.0L down quick too.

Worth a thought, you can always carry the flexfan for backup!

While we're fanning,
I love the fan on the 2004 WJ Grand Cherokee! It is HYDRAULIC! It runs off the P/S pump and the PCM controls it's speed, no noise, no surge when it engages, no roar cold. I wish I could get a controller for this setup and market it. It seems to be an awesome allaround setup.
FWIW, I'm averaging 17.5 mpg around town on the WJ after changing to Synthetic oil. Not bad for a Gas guzzling V-8 SUV...
