If the stuff laying on the lifters is "chunky" when moved around with a screwdriver etc;
Break it up and take a shop vac and suck it out.
 Then flush the remainder down.
This is a pre 64, so can't you drop the oilpan easiliy and clean it out too?
If it's the gunked up, I'll bet the pickup screen will plug if you don't get it all thinned out before trying to start it.
