That two bolt flange should be pretty standard for all cars/trucks after 65. That's why the change. I'd take the manifold over to an exhaust shop and see if they have one that fits -- chances are they do. A 4.0L flange should fit. They can bell a 2" pipe from there down instead of the factory 1-7/8" pipe. The idea of a header is really to increase exhaust gas flow, tuned or not, and secondarily to reduce weight. The 196 manifold is actually pretty good as far as flow -- I don't think you can improve upon it considering the head design and small amount of flow the 196 produces. It's not all that heavy considering the overall weight of the engine (as much as the later 232, and a slight bit more than an 81+ 258/4.0L). Might save about 10 pounds though. If you can weld tubing (have a MIG welder?) it wouldn't be too hard to buy some lengths of 1-1/4" pipe and make some. Buy a couple feet of straight pipe and about 4 "U" bends, then cut out the amount of curve that you need. Make a flange from 3/8" steel by tracing the manifold. Fit and mark the pieces while the engine is in so you don't put a pipe where something else is. It's tedious, but could be fun too. I'd tack the pieces in place and number them, mark lines in different color Sharpies (reserve a color for the final position!) to line them up, then break apart what doesn't work and try again. Like I said, can be tedious! You can even buy header kits with the needed bends. You'll need a collector, but AFAIK there are only four pipe collectors available. Just hammer one closed, I guess, unless you want to try making your own! Cast iron can be welded, but I'd take that thing to a WELDING shop, not a muffler shop. Drill a 2x6 just long enough and bolt the manifold to it. The shop will heat the mainfold before welding, and it needs something to hold it in position. An old head would be ideal, but the 2x6 should be sufficient. --------------- Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2008 17:38:50 -0400 From: "Bruce Griffis" <bruce.griffis@xxxxxxxxx> Okay, I paid a little bit of attention to the header discussion. I picked up a '64 exhaust manifold for my '65 195.6OHV. The '64 uses a 3 bolt flange to connect to the exhaust pipe. The '65 uses a 2 bolt flange. I'm sure I could probably find the correct flange for the exhaust pipe. Or, alternatively - my original '65 exhaust manifold had been welded by Tuffy Muffler in '80. Got the receipt from the original owner, lol. So, I'm guessing a muffler shop could weld it (the Tuffy Muffler shop has long since closed, but I'm sure someone else could weld it). But I started thinking it over today, after trying a couple Rambler places for a one year only '65 exhaust manifold. What about headers? Anyone know if folks make a header for a '65 American with a 195.6? They don't have to be equal length tuned headers.
