OK now this was a scary spot to be in an antique car with measured-out 
LP in the tank and not a parts store or any store for 100 miles:

The black mark in the upper right is a UFO. Or maybe a black helicopter. 
Or maybe dirt.

About 40 miles east and south of Austin Nevada is Spencer Hot Springs, a 
crack in the earth with hot water coming out (and not much else).

I drove east on some road to go over the mountain range and into the 
next-east valley. Monitor Valley? I forget. It was damned desolate, and 
a bit scary.

I was looking for "Diana's Punchbowl", an alleged hot springs. I never 
found it. That was the days before the interweb series of tubes. Now, on 
googleearth, there's a picture of it!
