Some pump arms had a "shoe" some didn't. Depended on brand and year, though I can't tell you either. All the pumps interchange, and that's the only thing I know of on a 196 that I'm pretty sure interchanges with the 199/232/258. So there should be no problem running the "barefoot" pump.

I sent Mac McCoy a fuel pump from my parts car (a 62 American Deluxe)?to be rebuilt.? 
It had a "shoe" on it, on the end of the?arm that goes into the engine.
He sent back a fuel pump without a?shoe, after making me wait 2 months.
Will this different?fuel pump work in my?63 OHV?
