Joe: I had similar intermittent clacking sounds on my 83 Spirit GT 258 and on my 94 Cherokee 4.0. In both cases it turned out to be a lifter that simply gave up. In both cases I ended up yanking the head and installing a new set of lifters. Cured both engines of lifter noise completely! I suspect that you didn't harm much with the gas mixture, but I would imagine that it gave the inside of that engine a good cleaning and broke up some minute trash that's causing the lifter issue. Hopefully it wasn't dirty enough inside to cause big chunks of goo to block the oil pickup screen. The Gremlin makes a "clacking" sound intermttently at idle. It goes away at higher RPM, but I think I may have damaged some bearings by running it with diluted oil. I'll check it out next week. The good news is that the car runs much smoother at speed and I can only attribute that to the newly balanced driveshaft.
