I would avoid the 4cyl trans. Go for at least the 3:3-1 first gear trans if you can find it. As when you put the 304 in you'll be looking for another trans for it. The 3:3-1 V8 trans will likely work well with both engines. Depending on what gear the rebel axle has, but I think if you compare overall ratios between you current setup and the 3.3-1 one trans and rebel rear it will be close enough. You may not be able to use O/D a lot with the 196, but that should not be too big a deal.
