If you're wearing respiratory protection (a fitted respirator with dust cartridges) silica sand won't hurt you and it will do the jobs you mentioned. I've used it on auto parts (outside) many times. It's cheap but it does tend to break up and make lots of dust if you reuse it more than a couple of times. Don't just wear one of those elastic band dust masks though. Get a good respirator and learn how to take car of it. If you want more sophisticated media the Eastwood catalog is one source, but I live near large cities where different types of media are available locally.
