I'm with you about not being a big fan of the BW automatics. Big trouble now
with them is they're so out of
date that some people don't remember how to rebuild them properly and parts
are tougher to find. Had the one rebuilt for
the Javelin and shortly after it crapped out again. Worked good for about a
year and a half.  Biggest reason my Javelin has a T5
manual in it is because I dislike the BW auto.
Any way to answer you're question, as far as I know, all 71 AMCs had the BW
auto in them. The 72 model year was the first year that Chrysler TorqueFlite
transmissions were used in AMC cars. I think the two models used are the 998
(sixes & small V-8s?not sure about the small V-8) and 727 (360 and 401 V-8).
