Whew! You made the right mistakes -- better to assume the worst and find out the opposite! Good diagnosis -- and good luck! :-) The thermo housing on my head was also really pitted. Since I'd had the head hot-tanked and media blasted it was spotlessly clean, so I filled the pits with JB Weld and filed it flat and even. No leaks.
