Don't forget the spark plug too! A cooler range plug often stops ping on motors (or a different brand, like NGK has a wider range) I would see about a timing adjustment of the cam too (retarding the cam a couple degrees like AMC and the others did to reduce NOx) for long term or going LPG.

forgot to add: iirc compression on even the 4v 327s wasn't -that- high.
it's got a delco dist, right?  recurve kits complete with adjustable
vac can are a dime a dozen.  a little careful experimentation with the
advance curves might get it purring on regular.
 
just a thought.
