Check the fluid.
The tcase only holds about a 3 pints of atf and recomended change interval is about every 12k.
Doesn't take much to smoke the case.
Only good thing is that it's a fairly easy job to pull one out and used cases can generally be found.
If it's a 231 case you can go clear up to 2001 to get one, You need the rear driveshaft if you move up to 97 and newer. 
  If it is dry and burned up, repairing it is usualy a waste as it takes out the aluminum case halves more often then not. 
  If kept full of fluid they usualy last a very long time.
