Yeah, reserves only work if you expect a relatively large number of bidders -- regardless of the object being sold. Reserves require bidding wars to work. If 2 or 3 people make entirely reasonable bids, there's no way to work the bid over the reserve. Personally, I think of two numbers: a low one that if it sells, I won't hate myself, even if I'm not happy; a high one that I would be adequately OK with if it sold. Then I set opening bid to the low number, and buy-it-now to the higher and let it go.
