I have not yet had the pleasure of driving behind a 196 with or without O/D except for a few brief trips using my roomates 63 Classic wagon back in college. I would think if you are not driving in the mountains too much and you're not in a big hurry, the 196 OHV should handle a 1,500 pound trailer OK. I would not expect to use the O/D feature too much with the trailer hooked up. You will probably be driving in third gear a lot. Others, I am confident, will have opinions on this.
