Re: [Amc-list] 195.6/T5

You REALLY need a vacuum gauge Tom!! I've been cruising with my car in OD as low as 1800-2000 rpm at 55-60 mph. I've recently been playing around and have discovered I get just as good or even slightly better gas mileage running in third gear at 2400-2800 rpm at the same speeds. My 4.6L six will pull 20" of vacuum at the higher rpm, only 15" at the lower rpm/higher revs. Of course the car feels a lot more responsive at the higher rpm range. I really can't use OD until I'm cruising at 70 mpg or more with 3.55 gears! I could really use 3.73 gears and still get good gas mileage. I think I'm going to put some 60 or 65 series tires on next time I replace them (still a bit more left on them to replace now!) to get a bit more effective final drive ratio.

The only problem right now is the valve stem seals. They need replacing, and possibly the valve guides. It definitely uses more oil at the higher rpm! Got to get a bit more done on the house, then the truck fixed before I can hit the car though. I've been putting off an oil change until I replace the head, think I need to go ahead and get that done -- fresh oil (this has about 6K on it, I think) would help! I typically go 5K (Jeep recommended change interval) or a bit under.

Jim, the T-5 is similar to the SR-4 in dimensions. The bearing retainer is a good bit larger in diameter than the retainer on the SR-4. The top two holes on the T-96 bell should align with the top two on the SR-4 IIRC. I considered mounting an SR-4 in my old 63 American once, and put an old SR-4 up to a T-96 bell. I didn't compare the input shafts though. I figured a 1/2" aluminum plate would be needed. The top two bolts would go right through to the T-96 bell, the retainer would fit in the plate, two flush bolts would hold the plate in the bottom two T-96 bell holes, and two bolts would go through the plate to the SR-4 where the plate hung down past the T-96 mounting surface. I didn't know at the time that the retainer was so crucial for centering the transmission though! The plate would have to be bolted to the back of the T-96 bell perfectly centered in order for such a simple adapter to work. That's the only hard part. If the trans is more than 0.004" off center you won't
be able to keep a clutch in it.

3.55 with OD should be pretty good. From current experience,
2400rpm=70mph is quite fine for the 195.6 OHV, in OD. Still has
enough headroom to pass, and torque remaining is OK. I think
it's close to perfect because it's mileage is wildly sensitive
to driving style; if I have a heavy foot it gets 18mpg average,
light foot 23mpg.
