I don't usually reply to my own posts, but I have to recant my statement! I just got out from under the hood of the 65 w/L-head and full flow filter oil pump. It just might fit the 58-63 American, but it will be TIGHT! I just went and looked at my 62 parts car to confirm. On the full-flow pump the filter is 90 degrees to the pump body. This puts it leaning out at about 15 degrees from the engine block (about the same angle as the distributor in a 232). The center of the filter is about half-way between the end of the pump cover and block. The top of the idler arm sits closest to the pump. Since the E-stick control valve fits on top of the oil pump in the 62-63 American, the slightly taller full-flow pump cover will fit also. The filter, however, would go right up into the front upper control arm pivot rod bolt. If the filter is the same as the early 232 a remote adapter should work (using a remote adapter for the same -- provided there is one, and I think there is). The pump has a tube that goes up into the filter, so it may be a special filter for that year only as well. Of course if the threads are the same as the 232 filter the tube can be shortened and an adapter used. This option really depends on the filter used. I don't trust on-line ca talogs (like Rock auto) to have the correct part number for the 65 196 since it's a one-year-only item -- I bet they list the same filter for all 196 engines (at least 58-65). Tom, you need to get that pump from Joe and check it out! You will need the entire pump body, not just the filter adapter (which screws off -- Joe, removing it might make it easier to pack, send in two pieces). The pump cover has the oil pressure relief valve in it instead of in the side of the block. There should be no harm in leaving the block mounted pressure relief valve in place, it just dumps oil back to the pan.
